Red Eye Pain Medication for Children

Eye pain medication is often needed to overcome complaints in the eyes of children. But do not just choose a drug that hurts the eye. Treatment of red eye in children must be adjusted to the cause. Red eye or conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is a transparent layer that protects the inside of the eyelid and the whites of the eye. Inflammation makes blood vessels visible, so the eyes appear red. Red eye can be caused by viruses and bacteria. Eye pain due to viral or bacterial infections is very contagious. In addition to infection, red eye in children can also be caused by allergies, for example to dust mites, pollen, or animal dander, and because of irritation due to air pollution.

Treat Red Eyes Properly

Viral red eyes will generally heal itself without the need for treatment. To help reduce discomfort, you can give a cold compress to the eye. Meanwhile, red eye due to bacterial infection can be recognized from the discharge of yellow fluid from the eye, thus making the eyelids become sticky and closed, or swollen and crusty. For such cases, the doctor will give antibiotics in the form of eye drops or ointments. Likewise, if the red eye that occurs is classified as severe or lasts more than two weeks. There are two types of antibiotics for red eye pain medication that are commonly prescribed by doctors, namely chloramphenicol and fusidic acid. Chloramphenicol is usually given in the form of eye drops, or it can also be in the form of ointments. If chloramphenicol is not suitable, your doctor will likely give you a fusidic acid drug. Especially for children, this drug is preferred because it is not given too often. Likewise for elderly and pregnant women. Chloramphenicol and fusidic acid are likely to have side effects, which are stinging or mild pain in the eye for a few moments. What needs to be emphasized, both types of antibiotic eye pain medications must be obtained through a doctor's prescription, including how to use and recommended dosage. Meanwhile, the red eyes caused by allergies must be known to be the trigger, so they can be avoided. Immediately remove the child from these triggering factors. If the child feels uncomfortable with red eyes due to allergies, consult a doctor and ask for eye drops to resolve the complaint. If there are other allergic reactions, the doctor can give antihistamine drugs taken or other additional drugs to reduce itching and swelling in the eyes.
